Why We Turned Sponsoring BuiltByMe Into a One-Time $19 Payment Instead of a Subscription
The Sponsor plan used to be $39/month, billed automatically until you canceled. It's now $19, charged once, for a 30-day placement. Here's why we ripped out the subscription entirely.
Until this week, sponsoring BuiltByMe cost $39/month, billed automatically, cancel anytime. We changed it to $19, charged once, for a 30-day placement in the Sponsors sidebar. No renewal, no cancellation flow, no recurring charge at all. Here's the reasoning, including the part of this decision that actually costs us money.
Why it was a subscription in the first place
Honestly: because that's the default. Recurring placements are how most directories and sponsor slots are sold, Dodo (our payment processor) supports subscriptions natively, and recurring revenue is the metric every SaaS playbook tells you to optimize for. We set it up as a subscription because that's what you do, not because we sat down and decided it was the right fit for who's actually buying it.
What changed our mind
Our Sponsor plan buyers are indie makers and solo founders. The same people who are already running 10+ SaaS subscriptions to build and operate their own product: hosting, email, analytics, auth, payments, the works. Asking that audience to add one more recurring line item, for something that's fundamentally a marketing spend and not infrastructure, is a different psychological ask than it looks like on paper.
Our Launch plan has always been $9, one-time, and it converts fine. Sponsor being the only recurring charge in an otherwise one-time-payment lineup made it the odd plan out, a second mental model buyers had to evaluate before clicking pay. Every subscription is a small trust question: will I remember to cancel this, and what happens if I don't? A one-time charge doesn't ask that question at all.
What $19 actually gets you now
- Placement in the Sponsors sidebar, shown on every page of the directory, for 30 days
- Multiple DoFollow backlinks: SEO authority passed to your site
- Live in minutes, no review queue
- Highlighted in weekly winner emails
- One charge. That's it. It does not renew, and there is nothing to cancel.
When your 30 days are up, the listing quietly rotates out. If you want another placement, you buy another one. There's no dark-pattern auto-renewal timed to catch you off guard, and no support ticket six weeks later asking why you were charged again.
The part of this that costs us money
We're not going to pretend this is a free lunch. A subscription that nobody bothers to cancel is worth more to us over time than a one-time payment, full stop. Every Sponsor subscriber who forgot to cancel was pure upside for our revenue and mild friction for them. Switching to one-time payment means we lose that passive renewal revenue entirely. If someone wants to keep their spot past 30 days, we now have to earn that second purchase, not just wait for them to not get around to canceling.
We think that's a fair trade. A directory that makes its money off people forgetting to cancel isn't a directory we'd want to run, and it's probably not one you'd want to keep paying into either. If the placement is worth it, you'll buy another 30 days. If it isn't, we'd rather know that than keep charging you for it.
How to become a sponsor
Look for the "Become a Sponsor" slot in the Sponsors sidebar on any page of BuiltByMe, or check the pricing page. $19, one time, live in minutes.
