What is Keyword Density?

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears in your content relative to the total word count. For example, if "indie maker" appears 5 times in a 200-word page, the density is 2.5%. It's a basic but important on-page SEO signal — use your target keywords enough to signal relevance, but not so much that Google flags it as manipulation.

What's the Ideal Keyword Density?

  • 1–2% density is generally considered ideal for primary keywords.
  • Above 3% risks being flagged as keyword stuffing, which can hurt rankings.
  • Below 0.5% may mean the content isn't clearly focused on your target keyword.
  • Focus on natural, readable copy — Google's algorithms prefer context over repetition.
  • Use related synonyms and LSI keywords to add relevance without over-repeating one phrase.

How to Use This Checker

  1. 1Paste your full page copy, product description, or blog post into the text area.
  2. 2Results appear automatically — no need to click anything.
  3. 3Review the single keyword, 2-word phrase, and 3-word phrase breakdowns.
  4. 4Flag any phrase above 3% density (shown in red) and rewrite to reduce repetition.
  5. 5Aim for your target keyword appearing 1–2% of the time across the content.

Why 2-Word and 3-Word Phrases Matter

Most search queries are 3–5 words long. Checking your 2-word and 3-word phrase density tells you whether your content naturally aligns with how real users search. If "indie product directory" appears 4+ times in a short page, it may look unnatural to Google. If it appears once or twice, that's strong relevance signaling.
